Smart Energy Systems Week Austria 2017, 16.-19. Mai 2017, Messe Congress Graz

Smart Energy Systems Award 2017

During Smart Energy Systems Week Austria

The renowned Smart Grids Week Austria has been organized by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, the Climate and Energy Fund and their cooperation partners from the energy sector and industry for the last 10 years. It is one of the most traditional and most prestigious specialist forums in the energy and technology community. Indeed, the event’s format has already outgrown itself and the event deals increasingly with the design of sustainable energy systems and infrastructures as is reflected in the new title “SESWA Smart Energy Systems Week Austria”.

At the centre of Smart Energy Systems Week Austria is the system integration of energy technologies and the greater flexibility of the energy system. The event focuses on the sectors innovation, research and technology development in a socio-technical and socio-cultural context. Energy sub-systems and infrastructure (grids, buildings, transport systems, etc.) and their interaction (linking sectors, building to grid, vehicle to grid, etc.) are considered. Aspects of the institutional framework for innovation and market transition shall also be discussed.

As part of the Smart Energy Systems Week the “Smart Energy Systems Award” will be presented in four categories. In this way outstanding achievements in the field of research and innovation with regard to the design of future energy systems will be commended and highlighted as part of a spectacular awards ceremony.

Categories

The “Smart Energy Systems Award 2017” will be presented in four categories and, in addition to excellent research papers and projects, also honours concrete demonstration projects and start-ups.

The SESWA Award will be presented in the following categories:

  • “Next Generation” for academic papers
  • “Tech Solution” for applied research and development
  • “Local Hero” for pilot and demonstration projects
  • “Entrepreneur” for start-ups

Please submit your posters by 24th April 2017 – details as follows.

The category “Next Generation”

In the category “Next Generation” an outstanding academic paper, a specialized dissertation or a Master thesis, which deals with an innovative approach to a practical problem in the field of Smart Energy Systems, will be honoured.

Target group

Next generation academics who have completed their doctoral thesis or Master thesis in the last three years or have published a scientific article.

Submission / selection procedure

Submissions may be made until 24 April 2017 in the format of a poster (in line with the Poster requirements), the PDF of the academic work shall also be submitted.

On 15 May the authors of selected works will be given the opportunity to present their work in a 15-minute time slot at the “Pre-event of Creative Heads” (Details here). The work will be discussed with the participants and subsequently assessed. The best submission will receive the SESWA Award – “Next Generation”.

The following criteria will be used for the assessment:

  • Academic excellence (30%),
  • Innovation value / originality (30%),
  • Relevance (reference to current practical problems) (25%),
  • Content-related structure / Clarity of presentation (publication, poster, talk) (15%).

The category “Tech Solution”

In the category “Tech Solution” outstanding achievements in the field of applied research and development (technologies, components, etc.) which play a significant role in the implementation of Smart Energy Systems, will be distinguished.

Target group

Companies and academic institutions

Submission / selection procedure

Submissions may be made until 24 April 2017 in the format of a poster (in line with the Poster requirements) and shall be exhibited at the specialist conference. The selection of the award winner shall be by an independent jury.

The following criteria will be used for the assessment:

  • Innovation content (30%),
  • Implementation potential (30%),
  • Relevance (sustainable energy systems) (25%),
  • Content-related structure / Clarity of presentation (poster) (15%).

The category “Local Hero”

In the category “Local Hero” a project team that has already been successful as a pioneer in the implementation / application / demonstration in limited areas of Smart Energy Systems will be honoured. The solution implemented acts as a beacon for forward-looking developments.

Target group

Project teams e.g. comprising implementation partners, technology companies and academic institutions, which are working on the implementation of a smart energy system and are already able to demonstrate first applications.

Submission / selection procedure

Submissions may be made until 24 April 2017 in the format of a poster (in line with the Poster requirements) which will be exhibited at the specialist conference. The selection of the award winner shall be by an independent jury.

The following criteria will be used for the assessment:

  • Implementation potential (replicability, transferability, scalability) (30%),
  • Relevance (sustainable energy system) (30%),
  • Innovative content (25%),
  • Content-related structure / Clarity of presentation (poster) (15%).

The category “Entrepreneur”

In the category “Entrepreneur”, a team comprising a start-up company and additional partners (e.g. energy companies, technology providers, users, researchers) that has developed a concept for a technology and data based energy service regarding the challenge below will be distinguished at the SMART SERVICE INNOVATION SESSION on 17 May (Details here):
In the smart energy systems of the future different sources of energy such as electricity, heat or mobility will be linked intelligently to one another thus making a contribution to the optimization and stability of the overall system. Smart Services, i.e. new energy services will bring the smart energy system to life. What attractive services can we develop for various energy customers as well as for b2b in the energy sector or elsewhere to use renewables better, to link more energy sources more intelligently to one another, to employ assets more efficiently and to handle business processes more easily? (Further details here)

Target group

Innovative start-ups together with energy companies, technology, researchers, potential users and essential users (municipalities, property developers, infrastructure companies, etc.).

Submission / selection procedure

In the afternoon you will pitch your “Smart Service” to a jury and a large specialist audience. The winning team will be presented with the SESWA award - “Entrepreneur”.

Award ceremony

The ceremonial presentation of the awards by representatives of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, and the Climate and Energy Fund will take place during the evening reception on 17 May 2017 in Graz.
